The history of College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (CMEE), Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) dates back to the early 1950s. The division of Aeronautical Machinery Processing, as the predecessor to CMEE, was established in September 1952. In February 1957, the division of Aeronautical Machinery Processing was reconstructed and renamed to Department of Aeronautical Machinery Engineering. The length of schooling was set to be five-year and Prof. Duo Yun was appointed as the first Head of the Department. With the great efforts of some distinguished scientists including Chengye Yu, Youzhen Zhang, Baoqu Cheng et al. who returned China from abroad with a good reputation in the field of Mechanical carried out teaching and researching on special processing, cutting / grinding processing and aircraft assembly for the national defense needs, which laid the foundation for the development of college and disciplines.
In the 1980s, CMEE established its distinguishing feature focusing on aerospace manufacturing. In 1981, the Mechanical Engineering discipline was approved by the State Council among the first programs of doctoral degree. In the 1990s, the research filed was expanded to digitization, intelligence etc. Since the 21st century, CMEE has formed "a two-winged unit" feature and advantage cross-integrated with advanced manufacturing process, equipment technology, and digital manufacturing technology, which has built a good reputation at home and abroad.
